Playing Guitar Music Books ( beginner)?

I am sort of confused, hope someone can guide me on this. I am looking at my beginner guitar songbooks, for one song for example, time is 4/4 key of C major. Above one measure it has the base as the chord of C and that measure has four quarter notes. So I strum 4 times with the quarter notes..correct? (I am playing rhythm / base)
What about if the lead has a half note then do i play it with a half note too or do I continue to play the four strums to a measure… Is there just something or everything i am not getting here.. please explain to me. How should I strum each measure using 4/4 time in the key of C major as your example .. it is what i am learning now and be easier for me, I think.

You almost never play along with the lead. If you’re doing basic stuff then just strum 4 times every bar. Once you get into strumming patterns you can make your own patterns (mostly they come naturally) and play something that sounds right for the song.
